Estradiol Cream safety information

What to know before starting Estradiol Cream. A licensed clinician reviews your full health history before any prescription is issued.

FDA boxed warning

  • Boxed warning: estrogen used without a progestogen raises the risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer) in women who still have a uterus. Your clinician decides whether you also need a progestogen. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your clinician right away.

Common side effects

  • Common side effects include headache, breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, and spotting or bleeding.

Important safety information

  • Do not use it if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, have or had breast cancer or another estrogen-sensitive cancer, have or had blood clots, a stroke or a heart attack, have a blood-clotting disorder or liver disease, or are pregnant.
  • Estrogen therapy has been linked to higher risks of stroke and blood clots. Taken with a progestin, it has also been linked to higher risks of breast cancer and heart attack. Share your full health history in your questionnaire.
  • Get medical help right away for chest pain, shortness of breath, a sudden severe headache, vision changes, weakness or numbness, or pain or swelling in one leg.
  • Others can absorb it through your skin. Let the cream dry, wash your hands after applying it, and keep children and pets from touching the area.
  • Use only as directed by your prescribing clinician.

If side effects come up

Message your care team — if side effects are disruptive, your clinician can adjust your plan or stop treatment. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
